nbsp; Its Time to Sin More, and Hate Less nbsp; nbsp; My soul is embedded with classic Catholic-sin like crimson rubies buried in a sandbox. And Im not just talking about eating two helpings of double-decker chocolate cake (although I do that, too) - I swear, I lie, I mock the Bible, I use the Lords name in vain (to name a few). I love the very term sin - never has there been a three-letter word with so much power, such drastic implications. But as far as Im concerned, my sins are holy. Each moment, as my moral code thickens like congealing milk, I sin more - for I embrace my sin. As humans, we are born and die with a myriad of imperfections, but to fear sin and god is to fear life. I cant live this way†¦show more content†¦We are all animals with instincts to survive, and we do what is needed to live. There is no shame in this struggle that has been taken up by ants and bears and men. Besides, sins come and go - what may be unholy today could make me a martyr tomorrow. Take a look at Galileo: he was shunned for his work when he lived and now he is studied. Most of us sinners arent dark, twisted characters that tote guns like garments; we are passionate, sensitive, thoughtful people. We, as Billy Joel sings, merely would rather laugh with sinners than cry with the saints. nbsp; John Steinbecks novel, The Grapes of Wrath, shows that sin is relative. Tom Joad, for example, murdered a man who attacked him. Throughout the novel, he explains that, Id do what I done - again. I killed a guy in a fight. We was drunk at a dance... No, I aint (ashamed of nothin)(33). As he shows, the murder was simply a means of survival; he never had nothing against Herb(69). Similarly, the migrant farm workers, left starving by the system, are forced to go out not to beg, but to steal(555). And there is no shame in their theft because they have no choice - is it more of a sin to let your baby die or to steal food from people who have too much, people who make sure the hungry never get fed enough. Totalitarian is stated as a political authority widely used to describe the kind of state and society engineered by Joseph Stalin. Historians on Soviet politics recognize the two theories focused on the totalitarian model. Basically, there are two totalitarian models- â€Å"an operational one that tried to describe the existing Soviet society and a developmental one that focused on the origins of totalitarianism and on the responsibility of Marxism-Leninism for Stalinist. In a totalitarian authority, there is an evident indication off nominate leader and a one-party state. There Is also the presence of brutal crushing of Internal opposition. â€Å"The state not only monopolized the Instrumentalities of coercion but also dominated the means of mass communication;†3 totalitarianism allows â€Å"no challenge to the single official ideology. â€Å"4 Those who actually publicly oppose the leader are then faced with brutal suppression. The period during Stalin’s reign was perhaps the most transformation period of Soviet history. He consolidated his grip on power and used this to actively transform the culture and economic leslies of the time. It was during Industrialization that the Soviet union became truly totalitarian. Industrialization was the key element of Stalin’s revolution Rejecting the prior Bolshevik conviction with the bourgeois institution, he sought to embrace â€Å"socialist realism,†5 denouncing anything that was remotely of â€Å"bourgeois intellect. â€Å"6 However, these cultural changes were minor in comparison to the vast changes of his economic policies. Joseph Stalin understood the inherent problem in starting a communist revolution In Russia: the nation failed capitalism, and It would need to aka a translation from socialism to communism. He understood that the translation would require heavy Industrialization on a massive scale in order to successfully compete with Western modernization. 7 Stalin saw the need to industrialized as a pragmatic matter of self-defense. â€Å"Do you want our socialist fatherland to be beaten and to lose its independence? â€Å"8 he asked in a famous February, 1931 speech. He continued on: â€Å"If you do not want this you must Putnam end to its backwardness in the shortest possible time and develop genuine Bolshevik tempo In building up the socialist system of the economy†¦ We are fifty or a hundred years behind the advanced countries. We must make good this difference in ten years. Either we do it, or we shall be crushed. â€Å"9 Once Stalin ascended into power, the New Economic Policy introduced by Lenin was gradually destroyed. 10 In agriculture it was replaced by collective farms, while In Industry, It paved the way to a Five-Year Plan which assigned production targets to production figures for heavy industrialization quota at the beginning of the first five year plan in 1929. As Keen pointed out, the unrealistic optimism of these goals were to reached until 1960. 11 It seemed that there was no viable structure behind the planning as â€Å"planning’ was reduced to naming target figures which had little more than propaganda significance†12. Abstruse commands were of a more practical importance than carefully elaborated planning; and â€Å"the commands were based on guesses, prejudices, and whims. â€Å"13 The propaganda, however, was extremely successful in that it accomplished its goal which was to increase production. By 1934, there was a fifty percent increase in industrial output with an average annual growth ate of eighteen percent, while the population of industrial workers doubled. 14 The success was due to the effective manipulation of the public in Stalin’s grandiose project; the workers’ continuous belief that accepting lower standards of living was a small amount to pay for the future modernization of Soviet Union. Cashbook, a peasant, described how his family property was arbitrarily taken and his brother murdered, only to conclude: â€Å"But then, after all, look at what we’re doing. In a few years now we’ll be ahead of everybody industrially. We’ll all have automobiles and here won’t be any differentiation between kulaks and anybody else†1 5 The poor were blinded by an unrealistic optimism off utopian society Stalin has laid out. Stalin and his followers undertook a series of actions that drastically reinforced totalitarianism in the Soviet order. The basic elements were maintained: the single-party state, the single official ideology, the manipulation of legality and the state’s economic dominance. Service pointed out that other elements were greatly altered as he â€Å"crucified politics and hyper-centralized administrative institutions. â€Å"16 In 1927, the localization began with voluntary collective farms. However, very few volunteered. In 1928, only less than 1% of arable lands were collective and by 1929, the numbers increased to 7%, which were still not sufficient. 17 As Stalin continued to intimidate those who politically opposed him, the courage of people who wanted to stand up to his wild economic policies faltered. By the spring of 1930, the proportion of collective lands increased to 60%. 8 The reason was Stalin’s decision to make acclimatization a mandatory process, which was also increasingly violent and brutal. The government called for the rapid and complete acclimatization, which would eventually lead to the overall colonization of the countryside. Kulaks stood to lose the most from acclimatization; the process of rapid acclimatization was made possib le through a governmental assault on the peasant group. Stalin’s government proclaimed that the collective farms should be formed exclusively from the poor peasant households. Like Lenin before him, Stalin saw the kulaks, vaguely defined as wealthy peasants, as â€Å"unacceptably capitalist. â€Å"19 Stalin was forceful in denunciation f the kulaks, he said: â€Å"We have gone over from a policy of limiting the exploiting tendencies of the kulak to a policy of eliminating kulaks as a class†¦ Decentralization is now an essential element in forming and developing kolkhoz. Therefore, to keep on discussing decentralization is ridiculous and not serious. When the head is cut off, you do not weep about the hair. â€Å"20 Stalin successfully divided the peasants, which made it easier for them to oppose. The attacks on the kulaks also helped make the impression that it was only the kulaks that resisted acclimatization. They were used for such an impression that they were exploiting their neighbor peasants. The lower peasants felt no empathy towards the Kulaks, who always was a little better off than them. And since kulak was so loosely defined, anyone who resisted acclimatization could be quickly labeled a kulak. The Communists were often dismayed that even after vicious propaganda campaigns, most peasants sympathized more with kulaks than with the Communist Party. So those who sympathized with the pleas of the kulaks were quickly labeled a sub-kulak. 21 Many of these poorer peasants were ultimately reclassified as kulaks themselves s they strongly resisted Stalin’s oppression. Most Joined the collective farms reluctantly. Many were executed for trying to sell off or slaughter their livestock rather than donating them to the collective farms. Stalin’s Russia was a case of a totalitarian state. Stalin was an absolute dictator who used the most conniving means of coercion. The Kulaks who opposed acclimatization were dealt with absolute brutal treatment. Many were killed, sent to Siberia, or thrown in the gulags, forced labor camps. 22 And the one thing that remained consistent was their loss of properties. Local districts were even required to fill quotas of Kulaks to identified. Keen described the violence of this time as â€Å"collaboration’s most significant precedent: Mass murder for vaguely defined political and economic goals became a possibility – this was the most important legacy of acclimatization†24 The ultimate results of acclimatization were not what the regime had hoped. Grain production declined ten percent between 1928 and 1932, and in addition delivery quotas were â€Å"two to three times higher than the quantities the peasants had previously marketed†. 5 Many people starved to death between 1932 and 1933. The grain production was minimal and the statistics were miscalculated. As there was little amount of grains brought in the cities, almost none were left for the people in the countryside. The horrors of the famine were focused in Ukraine. It was estimated that five to seven million people starved to death. 6 Meanwhile, the Cheek, also known as the Main Political Administration, efficiently detected and suppressed any dissent in the city. Stalin and the Cheek chief Yoga scoured for any political opponents. Former Immensities and Socialist-Revolutionaries were hunted out penthouse their political parties had barely existed since the 1922 show-trials. 27 In 1931, newspapers were filled with stories of professional malefactors caught, accuse d, and sentenced. When Bess Laminated and Sergei Sorts, who were supporters of Stalin , had publicly expressed their disgruntlement, the Cheek immediately arrested them and later were punished for factionalism. â€Å"29 Stalin ran a tight political control as he used the Cheek as a weapon to bring terror to all opposition to his economic policies. The rapid acclimatization and industrialization under Stalin’s regime had costs millions of lives. The purges which victimized the peasants, workers, the intelligentsia, and the State party itself had been â€Å"previously unequaled in the long and brutal history of Russia. â€Å"30 As Stalin launched his revolution from above, the rapid industrialization and acclimatization of agriculture races of capitalism left by the New Economic Policy was reached. While many historians still argue whether Stalin intentionally starve the people to death or it was simply a matter of miscalculated production , the consistency remains on the fact that it was through acclimatization and industrialization that Soviet Union’s totalitarian rule was sealed. Stalin’s central planning was immediately heavily emphasized on rapid industrialization, which ultimately led to its collapse due to the high imbalance. Although the goals set out benefited the nation, the process of localization and industrialization bought in violent coercive methods that created a period of famine and left the legacy of broken morale. During Stalin’s acclimatization, the difference between public and private spheres of life was utterly destroyed as everything was state-centered. The attempts to immobile the public in Stalin’s grandiose projects to gain legitimacy of the act, the tight political and economic control run by violence and threats, as well as the utter destruction of public and private affairs are all substantial evidences of Soviet Union becoming an official totalitarian state. Document Study: Donner Party 1. The Donner Party was made up of the Donner brothers, George and Jacob, along with their wives and children, all adding up to 8 people, they were the main members. The families set off with another friend, John Denton, six wagons and two teamsters, Noah James and Samuel Shoemaker. The Reeds were another key family and they consisted of James Reed, his wife Margaret and their three children. Also travelling with them were: Virginia Reed (Margaret’s daughter from a previous marriage), Margaret’s mother and 5 employees: A servant, Eliza Williams, her half-brother, Baylis, and three teamsters. Hiram Miller also travelled with the Reeds as an employee. The Breen’s (9 in total), Eddy’s (4 in total), Murphy’s (13 in total), the Keseberg’s and Hardkoop (6 in total), the Wolfinger’s, Spitzer and Reinhardt (4 in total), McCutchen’s (3 in total), Graves’ (12 in total), Stanton, Halloran, Antonio and Trudeau were the others who made up the party. 2. Virginia Elizabeth Reed was Margaret Reeds daughter from a previous marriage. She was 13 years of age when she left with the Donner Party. She wasn’t formally adopted by James Reed, but he was her legal guardian and treated her like one of his own children. Her writings have become the most invaluable source of information regarding the Donner Party’s experiences on their trek. 3. In her letters, with the innocent and naive perspective of a child, Virginia Reed writes about her experiences as a member of the fateful Donner Party. The letters are addressed to her cousin, Mary (â€Å"My dear cousin Mary) and all state â€Å"I take this opportunity to write to you now, that we are all well at present†. She explains and illustrates to her cousin the trouble that her family went through on their journey to California. We see that, until they came to the â€Å"Big Sandy†, they did not have any troubles but when they crossed the desert, some of their best oxen were lost, their â€Å"best yoke of oxen’s† and are forced to sell some of their supplies to replace the animals. She then goes on to explain how the Donner Party was then forced to take a short cut, â€Å"Hastings’s Cut-off†, over the Salt Plains. Apparently, the Donner Party saved three hundred miles but was forced to go through a ong drive of â€Å"40 miles without water†. They eventually reach the mountains and experience on of their coldest nights. To escape the freezing temperatures, Virginia tells us that â€Å"We spread one shawl down, we laid down on it and spread another over us and then put the dogs on top†. She further states that, â€Å"if it hadnt been for the dogs w e would have frozen†. The Party lost their cattle and were forced to halve their provisions. Soon enough, the Reeds are forced to pack all their provisions onto a single mule and trek through snow which was so deep â€Å"we could not go over†. TEMPORARY PHENOMENA Transients: Transients are short-duration, high-amplitude pulses superimposed on a normal voltage waveform. An engineer of transmission system deals with the control of active and reactive power flow in order to maximize both the loading capability and stability limits of the transmission system. On the other hand, an engineer of distribution system deals with load compensation either by means of individua l or group compensation in order to maintain power quality for each load in the distribution system (Sankaran.C, 2002, John J.Paserba et al, 2000). The utilization of power electronic based power conditioning devices brought the solution for these power quality issues in distribution system. 1.2 FACTS CONTROLLERS In recent years, many multinational software companies and automobile industries established their units in India. In turn, it initiates many other small industries to supply their needs. The growth of these industries is found to be very fast and it pollutes the power system by injecting harmonics into it. These industries need electrical power for its operation. Establishing new power generation unit is not so easy in India due to the initial cost. In addition it has many constraints like fuel constraints, political constraints, economical constraints and technological constraints. This makes to think an alternate solution for the scarcity of power by improving the quality of existing power. Reducing the wastages and improving the quality of available power is equivalent to generation of power. To improve the reliability and deliver energy at the lowest possible cost with improved power quality, power supply industries require increased flexibility in the transmission and in the di stribution systems. The power industries are handling these challenges with the power electronics based technology of Flexible AC Transmission systems (FACTS). This term covers the whole family of power electronic controllers, some of which may have achieved maturity within the industries, while some others are yet in the design stage. As Higorani et al (1999) described the various VSC based FACTS controllers are available for power quality improvement. FACTs has been defined by the IEEE as follows. Power electronics based system and other static equipment that provide control of one or more AC transmission system parameters to enhance controllability and increase power transfer capability. In general, FACTs controllers can be classified as follows Series Controllers Shunt Controllers Combined series and shunt Controllers Combined shunt and series Controllers Based on the power electronic devices used in the controller, the FACTS controllers can be classified as: (A) Variable impedance type FACTS Controller (B) Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based FACTS Controller The variable impedance type controllers include: (i) Shunt connected- Static Var Compensator (SVC) (ii) Series Connected-Thyristors Controlled Series Capacitor or Compensator (TCSC) (iii) Combined shunt and series connected Thyristors Controlled Phase Shifting Transformer (TCPST) of Static PST The VSC based FACTS controllers are: (i) Static synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) (shunt connected) (ii) Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) (series connected) (iii) Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) (combined series-series) (iv) Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) (combined shunt-series) The VSC based FACTS controllers have several advantages over the variable impedance type. VSC based STATCOM response is much faster than a variable impedance type SVC. STATCOM requires less space than SVC for same rating. It can supply required reactive power even at low values of the bus voltage. In addition, a STATCOM can supply active power if it has an energy source or large energy storage at its DC terminals. It can also be designed to have in built, short-term overload capability. The only drawback with VSC based controllers is that it requires use of self-commutating power semiconductor switches such as Gate Turn-off (GTO) thyristors, Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT), Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristors (IGCT). However, the VSC based controllers build with emerging power semiconductor devices using silicon carbide technology will lead to the wide spread use of VSC based controllers in future. Among FACTs controllers, the shunt controllers have shown feasibility in terms of cost effectiveness in a wide range of problem solving from transmission to distribution levels. For more than a decade, it has been recognized that the transmittable power through transmission lines could be increased and the voltage profile along the transmission line could be controlled by an appropriate amount of compensated reactive power. Moreover, the shunt controller can improve transient stability and can damp power oscillation during a post-fault event. Using a high speed power converter, the shunt controller can further alleviate the flicker problem caused by electrical arc furnaces. .1 SERIES CONTROLLERS Static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) is series reactive power compensation devices used in transmission level. The series compensation is obtained by controlling the equivalent impedance of a transmission line, to regulate the power flow through the line. The SSSC can be considered as a static synchronous generator that acts as a series compensator whose output voltage is fully controllable, independent of line current and kept in quadrature with it, with the aim of increasing or decreasing the voltage drop across the line, thus controlling the power flow. The basic structure of a SSSC connected with the network is shown in Figure 1.1. Line C VSC TF Figure.1.1 Series Connected SSSC The SSSC injects a voltage Vq in quadrature with line current. It can provide either capacitive compensation if Vq leads the line current by à Ã¢â€š ¬/2 rad or inductive compensation if Vq lags line current by à Ã¢â€š ¬/2 rad. A relatively small active power exchange is required to compensate for coupling transformer and switching losses, and maintain the required DC voltage. 1.2.2 SHUNT CONTROLLERS STATCOM The schematic diagram of a STATCOM is shown in Figure.1.2. In principle, all shunt type controllers inject additional current into the system at the point of common coupling (PCC). VSC that uses charged capacitors as the input dc source and produces a 3à Ã¢â‚¬ ¢ ac voltage output in synchronism and in phase with the ac systems. The converter is connected in shunt to a bus by means of the impedance of a coupling transformer. A control on the output voltage of this converter is either lower or higher than the connecting bus voltage, controls the reactive power drawn from or supplied to the connected bus. The impedance of the shunt controller, which is connected to the line causes a variable current to flow and hence represents an injection of current into the line. As long as the injected current is in phase quadrature with the line voltage, the shunt controller can either supply or consume variable reactive power. The Phase Lock Loop (PLL) ensures that the sinusoidal component of the injected voltage is synchronized (matching in frequency and required phase angle) with the AC bus voltage to which VSC is connected through a coupling inductor. Often, the leakage impedance of the interconnecting transformer serves as the coupling inductor. It also serves as harmonic filter for the voltage injected by the VSC. The injection of harmonic voltages can also be minimized by multi-pulse (12, 24 or 48), and/or multilevel convertors. At low power levels, the pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is sufficient to control the magnitude of the fundamental component of the injected voltage. The high voltage IGBT devices can be switched at high frequency (2 kHz and above) of sinusoidal modulation enables the use of simple LC-low pass filters to reduce harmonic components. 1.2.3 COMBINED SHUNT AND SERIES CONTROLLERS (a). Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC): The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is the most versatile FACTS controller for the regulation of voltage and power flow in a transmission line. It consists of two-voltage source converters (VSC) in which one connected in shunt and the other one connected in series. The DC capacitors of the two converters are connected as shown in Figure.1.3. the shunt connected converters work as STATCOM and controls the reactive current injected in to the line. Series connected converter work as SSSC and control reactive voltage injected series with the line. The combination of these two converters enables to exchange active power flow between the two converters. The series connected converter can supply or absorb the active power. The shunt-connected converter provides the required reactive power and injects the reactive current at the converter bus. Thus, a UPFC has 3 degrees of freedom whereas other FACTS controllers have only one degree of freedom or control variable. The concept of combining two or more converters can be extended to provide flexibility and additional degrees of freedom. A Generalized UPFC refers to the use of three or more converters out of which one shunt connected while the remaining converters are series connected (b). Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC): An Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) refers to the configuration of two or more series connected voltage source converters sharing a common DC bus as shown in Figure 1.4. The Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) is used reactive (series) compensation of each individual line. In addition to this, the IPFC is capable of exchanging real power between the two or more compensated lines. To achieve this AC side of the series connected VSCs are connected in different lines and on the DC side, all the DC capacitors of individual converters are connected in parallel. This is possible because all the series converters are located inside the substation in close proximity. The basic difference with a UPFC is that the support system in the UPFC is the shunt converter instead of a series converter. The series converter associated with the main system of one IPFC is termed as the master converter while the series converter associated with the support system is termed as the slave converter. The master converter controls both active and reactive voltage within limits while the slave converter controls the DC voltage across the capacitor and the reactive voltage magnitude. 1.3 APPLICATION FACTS CONTROLLERS IN DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS Although the concept of FACTS was developed originally for transmission network, later on this has been extended since last decade for improvement of Power Quality (PQ) in distribution systems operating at low or medium voltages. In the early days, the power quality referred primarily to the uninterrupted power supply at acceptable voltage and frequency. In the modern context, power quality problem is defined as any problem manifested in voltage, current or frequency deviations that result in failure or malfunctioning of customer equipment. However, the increase in the use of computers, microprocessors and power electronic systems has resulted in power quality issues involving transient disturbances in voltage magnitude, waveform and frequency. The nonlinear loads not only cause power quality (PQ) problems but also very sensitive to the voltage deviations. The unbalanced load in the distribution system like single-phase railway loading creates power quality problem at the distributio n level. The highly inductive load like arc furnace is a major source of creating power quality problems in distribution network. Hingorani et al (1999), was the first to propose FACTS controllers for improving power quality in distribution systems. They have called it as Custom Power Devices. These are based on VSC with appropriate controller. Based on the types of connection with the distribution network the custom power devices classifications are given below; 1. Series connected Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) 2. Shunt connected Distribution STATCOM (DSTATCOM) 3. Combined shunt and series connected Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). The Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is a series connected custom power device in the distribution systems. The DVR is analogous to a SSSC in the transmission system. The main function of a DVR is to reduce voltage sags seen by sensitive loads such as semiconductor manufacturing plant or a paper mill. They have been designed to compensate three phase voltage sags up to 35% for duration of time less than half a second (depending on the requirement). If the voltage sag occurs only in one phase as in the case of Single Line to Ground (SLG) faults then the DVR may be designed to provide compensation for sags exceeding 50%. The capacitor is designed to store energy in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 MJ per MW of load served. A DVR is connected in series with the distribution feeder through a transformer. The low voltage winding of the transformer is connected to the converter. If a DVR is used mainly to regulate the voltage at the load bus, it injects a series voltage of the required magnitude if i t detects a voltage sag else remains in stand-by mode during which the converter is bypassed or it is not injecting voltage. It is necessary to protect the DVR against the fault currents as in the case of a SSSC. A DVR with IGBT/IGCT devices can be controlled to act as a series active filter to reduce the voltage harmonics on the source side. It is also possible to balance the voltage on the load side by injecting negative and/or zero sequence voltages in addition to harmonic voltages. The distribution STATCOM (DSTATCOM) is similar to a STATCOM in transmission system that it uses a VSC of the required rating. However, the VSC used in a DSTATCOM is a 6-pulse converter with SPWM or Space Vector Modulated PWM (SVPWM) control over the magnitude of the injected AC voltage while maintaining a constant DC voltage across the capacitor. In DSTATCOM, faster power semiconductor devices such as IGBT or IGCT are used instead of GTO as in STATCOM. The rapid switching capability provided by IGBT (or IGCT) switches enables the use of DSTATCOM for balancing, active filtering and flicker mitigation. The unbalanced system is balanced by injecting negative sequence current to the system. The active filtering is done by injecting harmonic currents in the system. A DSTATCOM can be viewed as a controlled variable current source. If more power that is reactive is required for compensation in distribution system, dynamic capacitor rating is increased. To increase the dynamic rating in the capacitive range, a fixed capacitor can be connected in parallel with DSTATCOM. By connecting energy storage device such as a Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) or a battery charged by a separate charging system on the DC side, it is possible to exchange real power with the network for momentary interruptions or large voltage sags for a limited time. The combination of shunt and series active filters which are connected on the common DC side as shown in Figure.1.5 used as Unified Power Quality Conditioner. This configuration is inspired by the UPFC in the transmission system. Akagi.H (1996), suggest the possibility of a centralized UPQC at the distribution substation that will provide harmonic isolation between the sub-transmission system and distribution system. The series branch of UPQC provides this harmonic isolation in addition to voltage regulation and imbalance compensation. The shunt branch provides for harmonic and negative sequence current compensation in addition to DC link voltage regulation. A UPQC can be considered as the combination of DSTATCOM and DVR. A DSTATCOM is utilized to eliminate the harmonics from the source currents and balance them in addition to providing reactive power compensation to improve power factor or regulate the load bus voltage (Padiyar.K.R. 2007). This VSC can be operated at high switching frequency to provide a faster response. The STATCOM is a shunt connected power converter based compensating device. Van Zyl. A, et.al proposed an idea for Converter based solution to power quality problems on radial distribution lines (1996). This is a first power converter based shunt compensator. The concept of STATCOM was disclosed by Gyuayi,.L (1988). The concept gives the characteristics of VSC that are suitable for grid connected FACTS controller application. In the older version of reactive power compensation device, the reactive power is drawn from energy storage devices such as capacitor in the case of Static Var Compensator (SVC), but in STATCOM power is circulated within the connected network. The energy storage components used in the STATCOM is much smaller in capacity than tho se used in the SVC. In 1995, the first +100MVA STATCOM was installed at the Sullivan substation of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in northeastern Tennessee. This device is mainly used to regulate 161kV bus during the daily load variation to reduce the operation of the tap changer of a 1.2GVA 161kV/500kV transformer. The VSC used in this STATCOM is made up of eight two level VSC resulting a 48 pulse VSC. The output of each VSC is integrated by a complex interface zigzag connected interfacing transformers, because this is a two-level VSC, a series connection of five of gate-turn-off (GTO) thyristor is used as a main switch. The staircase type switching scheme at fundamental frequency (60Hz) was used as a control scheme for this STATCOM. Due to slow switching speed of the GTOs; the firing angles of the output wave form are fixed. Therefore, the amplitude of each output waveform is controlled by exchanging real power of the DC-link capacitor with the power grid. The power quality problem at distribution level like voltage regulation, harmonics reduction, power factor correction, reactive power compensation and unbalance compensations need to be carried out at distribution level. The DSTATCOM, connected to the grid through the coupling inductor at the point of common coupling (PCC) is controlled in such a way that it exchanges only reactive power with the grid. This is achieved by injecting current in quadrature with the grid voltage. The DSTATCOM is developed from the STATCOM used in transmission system for voltage regulation. This DSTATCOM is controlled by PI controller in dq coordinate using parks transformation matrix. This work reduced the computation time of the controller by avoiding Inverse Parks transformation. The application of DSTATCOM is extended to compensate the reactive power for isolated induction generator by Bhim Singh et al (2003). This gave the mathematical modeling of induction generator and DSTATCOM. As the DSTATCOM is suitable for distribution system and stand alone system researcher focused to increase the performance of the controller. The concept of using DSTATCOM as a shunt active filter to reduce the current harmonics in the industrial application and gradually extended to power systems application by Georges, S. et al (2006) and Kannan, H.Y. et al (2008). His â€Å"The Return of the Native† is also a tragedy unfolding many deepen aspects of his characters’ with the settings itself revealing impending damage or tragedy waiting to happen.   It appears hidden beneath the wastelands of Egdon Heath number of secrets aspiring to be opened. â€Å"It is a place of long life and of sudden death, of fertile spring and short, vivid summer.†(Flowers Spring, 19) Edgon Heath’s importance lies in the way it affected the personalities of Eustacia and Wildeve, who feel themselves depressed in these lonely places. For Hardy, life is painful and full of agony and is clearly seen in the eyes of protagonists. The plot of â€Å"The Return of the Native† is set in context to the passionate and romantic zeal of Eustacia who took her to a tragic end. â€Å"It is the force of circumstances-the malignant power of Edgon Heath to dwarf and thwart the aspiring soul –that derives Eustacia Vye to irretrievable disaster†. (Flowers Spring, 121) Hardy adopted Victorian style in â€Å"The Return of the Native† with its detailed description of the story with many references pertaining to classical and scriptural style. Initially, its theme raised the eyebrows in the society but later the same theme became most popular among readers and critics alike. The theme owes its popularity to its originality and very nifty; the novel contains various moral truths that were the part of the society. All the characters have appeared to be born and grown in relationship with their environment and changes in weather of Heath corresponds to the inner turmoil of characters. With Eustacia Vye as part of Heath, Diggory Venn too appears to be born out of the muddy earth and the name Wildeve itself suggests his attributes to be born out of Heath’s blowing winds. The story revolves around Eustacia who Hardy describes as the most tempestuous lady desperate for passionate love denied to her in the vast arid lands of the Dorset County with only his grandfather as her companion. She is feeling very dejected by her boring life and is looking for an ideal man with whom she could spend the rest of her life. By crafting Eustacia as the most voracious character, â€Å"The Return of The Nativeâ€Å" became yet another story in a family of genre of most sensational works of Hardy. Besides sensation of suspense, more important is the creation of melodrama and behavior in the extreme extent but it’s a novel that has both modest as well as honest appeal. The story raises the question how the free will of the people and fate can go side by side. Eustacia’s passionate desire to marry person of fortune brings her into contact with Clym and ultimately marries him. But fate has something else in store for her; Clym Yeobright’s wanted to open a school in native country and in his pursuit he got himself blinded and they had to live in a hut meanwhile Wildeve too inherited maximum sum of money and they began to meet regularly. This meeting became a cause for the biggest tragedy ever that could happen in their lives. First Clym’s mother Mrs Yeobright died due to heat and snakebite, as she was not allowed by Eustacia to enter into house. Later Eustacia died due to drowning and Wildeve too embraced death in his effort to save Eustacia. But Diggory Venn saved Clym only to leave him behind with blind eyes and as a wandering preacher. The story has a tragic ending but we can also see certain note of hope and optimism as Diggory Venn got his true love Thomasin. The whole story shows how human beings in their desire to obtain pleasure show incapacity to change for right actions leading to gravest tragedy. Hardy’s message is quite clear: happiness for human beings is very short lived, and they feel themselves at-least fortunate if they could at-least avoid pains. Amidst the conventional countryside, Hardy portrayed the changes in Victorian society his protagonists wanted to see in their lives, yet he too did not deny the errors of these uneducated and unsophisticated country folks who were equally known for their loyalty as well as prejudice. (Flowers Spring, 21) â€Å"The Return of The Native† was Hardy’s sixth novel and when it first appeared in the serial Belgravia, its subject raised controversy. But soon it became one of the most popular novels with its popularity lying in its inquisitive derive to probe most intricate issues involving human beings-disillusioned love affairs and societal prejudices crushing passionate desires. Hardy is quite clear when he says that no one can escape the destiny and those who would try to escape it would end up having tragic consequences’.   For D.H Lawrence, this novel delves into the ways communities handle their misfortunes. Many feel its ending is not clear even though there was tragedy in the end, yet Hardy gave it happy ending with the marriage of Diggory Venn and Thomasin. With this ending, Hardy left the readers to comprehend themselves the conclusion and it is quite true in real life too.   If there is a tragedy in the lives of the people, there are many who are happy too.   By making the ending of the novel uncertain and vague, Hardy states the life is also very uncertain and vague. â€Å"The Return of the Native† is very interesting to read and fully describes with intensity Hardy’s genre in describing his characters. With this story, Hardy deviated from his conventional style of being a tragic writer to bring forth happy ending.
